Looking north by northwest from Neck Point Park on a late summer afternoon. Neck Point Park and it's nearby cousin Piper's Lagoon Park are two of Nanaimo's coastal gems, offering gorgeous panoramic views, tidal pool exploration opportunities, resident Bald Eagles, trails, and more.

The mine head at Morden Colliery Provincial Park. Located just south of the city is this little park commemorates the first concrete mine head in the province and one of the few still standing. Kilometres of abandoned mine shafts hundreds of feet below you trace the route as you hike along the old rail bed that took coal to the harbour at the ocean. The area around the mine head provides a fascinating look at one of the City's founding industries.

NEW PHOTO! Snow? In Nanaimo? It does happen for a few days a year. Here it dawned sunny following a nice dump of snow in January 2005. Location: The E & N Rail line as it crosses Rosehill street.

The civilized way to travel. An early morning seaplane flight ready to go, against a backdrop of Newcastle Island Provincial Park. Amigo Airways flys passengers directly to the airport, bypassing hours of ferry and ground transport (free plug: Amigo Air is great! Try them!)

Westwood lake. This favourite hiking, running, and walking park includes a 5.7km trail around the lake, side trails up Mount Benson (seen here behind the lake), swimming, a playground, and more...This January photo shows a mist rising off the lake in the warm morning sun.

NEW PHOTO! The Millstone river winds its way through Nanaimo. Here it flows through a winter wonderland. Soon all the melting snow will turn the Millstone into a raging torrent.

Winter ice lingers along the southern shores of Westwood Lake. Shaded from the near-equinox sun by Mount Benson, this side of the lake often develops a skin of ice. The lake is also at a higher elevation, which contributes to the lower temperatures.
